Our community is all too familiar with the power of the ocean, but a visiting Martha's Vineyard artist will remind us of its natural beauty - from 1,000 feet up.
Gallery Coco's latest installation, Under the Sea, features the aerial ocean bottom and coastal photography of Richard Sherman. Dick is a seasoned, instrument-rated commercial pilot and third generation photographer in the cockpit of his L-17 NAVION Warbird airplane. His camera takes the co-pilot seat.
The Exhibit, on display at the Gallery Coco, located at 222 North Baylen Street, will open with an artist reception during Pensacola Gallery Night, Friday, July 11, 2008 from 5pm-9pm. Sherman's aerials will remain on display through early September 2008.
According to famed Martha's Vineyard artist, Alan Whiting, Pilot Artist Sherman has created a new art form. Dick explains, "What you see was created by nature. The abstract images are aerial shots of shallow areas in the sea." His images are giclée printed onto canvas and museum wrapped over a frame. Giclée (pronounced "gee-clay") printing is widely recognized as being the highest quality of all existing fine art printing methods. The finished product has the look and feel of a painting.
Dick Sherman's current collection includes aerials of the waters around Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island and southwest Florida, including the Florida Keys. Dick spends his winters on Marco Island off of Naples, Florida. Sherman comments, "I intend to continue photographing what I think is a fascinating display of visual and abstract art."
