Palm One Palm Two

We are often asked, "Where did the name 'Coco' come from?"

Short Answer:

Essentially, Coco was named after a dead dog.

Longer Answer:

A brief history

Joe Martin and I came up with the the idea of starting a graphic design business back in October 1994. We bought the equipment, software and all the tools needed to get a business going.  However, we could not come up with a decent name for the company.  The topic would come up every week or so and finally after three months of being nameless, it became very evident that we REALLY needed a name.

At that time, we both agreed that the name it needed to be:

  • high in the alphabet
  • have nice alliteration
  • be easy to remember
  • have positive connotation(s) and hopefully no negative connotations
  • was a word that meant something to us
  • and most of all... made US laugh.

At that point in the conversation, I said to Joe, "like Coco," (which was Joe's dog's name).

Joe laughed and we took the name Coco.

A little bit more

There is always more to any story; like why did Joe laugh at the mere mention of the name Coco and why the "dead dog" reference at the beginning of the story.  As to the latter, let's just say that every good story needs a hook, something to draw you in; a dead pet reference will do it every time.  Truth be told, when we started the company, Coco, the dog, was still alive, just  no longer with Joe's family.  She did ultimately live out her days with a very nice family, on a large piece of property, having all kinds of doggie fun, to a very old age (in dog years) I might add.  But if you want to know why Joe laughed... you'll need to ask Nancy.
